I’ve (NOT) Got a Lot to Say (aka FCing Crushcrushcrush in 16 Minutes Flat!)

July 31, 2009 at 6:30 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , )

So, last night I was a bit worried that my readers had overwhelmingly selected Paramore’s “Crushcrushcrush” for the day’s FC attempt. I had a job interview lined up for the following morning and had to make sure I got to bed at something resembling a decent hour. By the time I got everything else that needed doing squared away, it was already past midnight, oh crap! While “Crushcrushcrush” doesn’t have a particularly difficult melody, its notorious for being an endurance challenge for vocalists because you barely get a chance to breathe during the second half of the song! I prayed that I wasn’t in for another “Peace of Mind”-style marathon session, but as it turned out, I needn’t have worried…

B.Y.O.B. to the FC Party!

July 30, 2009 at 8:26 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

A couple of hours after posting yesterday’s article, I checked the song selection poll results, and once again found that two songs were neck-in-neck for the top spot, argh! This time, my readers were split between “Like a Fool” by Shaimus, and System of a Down’s “B.Y.O.B.”. I put out the call for some tie-breaking votes, but the first batch of responses did nothing to declare a winner. After a final last-ditch plea over Twitter (a pleet? a twea?), salvation came in the form of redion1992, who tipped the scales in favor of “B.Y.O.B.” with his last-minute vote. Thanks redion1992! Even though I knew that my unfamiliarity with the song would make it somewhat challenging, I felt like the really hard part of the process was already behind me. With a sigh of relief, I got to work…

All I Want is to Have My *$^%#@ Peace of Mind!

July 29, 2009 at 6:50 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

When the Boston DLC pack came out for Rock Band, I couldn’t get it fast enough – especially since I was playing on PS3 at the time! I was so excited I did a happy dance and even squeeed a few times! Quite a few of the tracks soon became house favorites amongst my Rock Band playing friends, which was fine with me, since I was mostly playing Expert Bass at the time. I found early on that most Boston songs were really rough for me on vocals however, and when I switched to Vox as my primary instrument, my friends’ penchant for picking Boston songs in BQP quickly became a cause for dread. More recently though, I’d started choosing Boston songs myself in hopes of improving my ability to sing them. I knew I was getting closer to figuring out where I needed to change octaves to avoid killing myself on the highly pitched phrases, especially on “Peace of Mind”, which gets a TON of play here…but I soon found out that I was nowhere near close enough!

Making Ears Bleeeeeeeeeed Singing Jesus Christ Pose

July 28, 2009 at 3:03 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

What to say about Soundgarden’s “Jesus Christ Pose”, hmmm. This is one of the few tracks I got recently that I actually spent MS Points to download since it wasn’t available for free through the current Pepsi promotion. I wasn’t familiar with the track myself before getting it for RB, but I knew a few of my friends liked playing it, and it’s notorious for being one of the songs that automatically gets vetoed when requested at the weekly Rock Band bar night I attend here in NYC. While the song seemed (to me) easier on vox than on any other instrument, I had a feeling that if I put “Jesus Christ Pose” in my poll it would get the votes of readers looking to give me a challenge. Sure enough, it won the day handily enough, but it turns out my visitors would probably have been better served voting for “Peace of Mind” or “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)” if they really wanted to make me work for my 100%!

Flying Through my FC on a…Sin Wagon!

July 27, 2009 at 3:50 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

Ah summer Sundays…warm weather, freak torrential downpours, and things to do that keep people away from their computer screens! I spent the better part of the afternoon helping my buddy shuttle his worldly belongings from his old apartment to a new one, and afterwards we both headed back to my place to chill and play some RB. On the drive home I decided to get my FC run out of the way first thing so we could enjoy our BQP session without distraction or time constraints. Despite my best efforts to entice people to vote in the day’s song selection poll, I was faced with yet another tie between two songs: Dixie Chicks’ “Sin Wagon” and Styx’s “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)”. To save me from a coin-flip scenario, my friend cast his vote for “Sin Wagon”. I’m sure he chose that one because it’s the shorter of the two and he wanted me to FC something quickly so we could get into BQP sooner. Ah greed, what a wonderful motivator!

No Threat of Doom from Maiden this Time!

July 26, 2009 at 1:42 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

As yesterday drew to a close, I was faced with a bit of a conundrum. My song selection poll had no winner, with 2 tracks tied for top votes, oh noes! So, what happens when my readers can’t make up their minds? As I put out the call over Twitter in search of 11th hour tiebreaker votes, my UstreamTV viewers chimed in that they’d rather see me try Iron Maiden’s “2 Minutes To Midnight” over Boston’s “Peace Of Mind”. But truth be told, I didn’t choose “2 Minutes To Midnight” solely on my audience’s insistence…it won the day because I was sure that it would take me less time to get 100% on ANY Maiden track over the octave-shifting-guess-at-what’s-being-charted nightmare that is “Peace Of Mind” (ok, that holds true for me on all Boston songs, damn them and their harmonies/falsettos!). Laziness FTW!

Tempted (to throw my mic at the TV, grrrr!)

July 25, 2009 at 5:12 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

When Squeeze’s “Tempted” became available as DLC for Rock Band, I was soooo excited! I pretty much grew up with this song playing in the background, and it always evoked warm fuzzy nostalgic feelings for my early 80s childhood whenever I listened to it as an adult. Its the kind of song that you just can’t help singing along with, and after years of doing so, I thought there wasn’t a nuance to the melody that I wasn’t familiar with. The very first time I sang the song in Rock Band however, I discovered how wrong I was!

Breeeeeeeeeeathe Through the Freeeeezing of my Game…

July 24, 2009 at 7:35 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

Ah, Evanescence! I will admit that I never listened to the songs in this pack before I bought them for Rock Band 2. I wouldn’t have purchased the pack at all if my fellow PMS Clan members hadn’t picked “Call Me When You’re Sober” to play at Almost Famous Tuesdays Rock Band Night a few weeks back when they were visiting NYC (I’m on guitar in the vid BTW, NOT my strongest instrument – especially when drunk & in heels!).

Smooth Criminal (aka “WTF pitch are they charting there?!”)

July 23, 2009 at 2:42 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , )

I dimly remember when Alien Ant Farm’s version of “Smooth Criminal” hit the airwaves. I was already out of college, and at the tail end of the time in my life when I actually listened to music on the radio. I tend to become attached to the first version of a song I become familiar with, and having grown up in the 80s, “Smooth Criminal” was always going to be a Michael Jackson tune in my mind. Ok, since it was inevitable that I’d mention MJ in this post, let’s just take a moment and say, “Rest in peace, Mike.” Alright now, back to the topic at hand!

Saaaaave Me! (from having to sing Spoonman again!)

July 22, 2009 at 5:28 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , )

I must have been delirious to put Soundgarden’s “Spoonman” as a choice on my song selection poll in the first place. When I was just starting out entering scores on ScoreHero (back in May, when I was still playing Rock Band 2 on my PS3) it was one of the most difficult songs from the base game for me to even gold star. After passing that milestone, I’d been able to consistently score 97-99% on the song, but I knew getting an FC was going to take work, given the sheer number of choke points sprinkled throughout the track. It was probably my success with “Master Exploder” – coupled with the desire to FC another base game song for a shot at moving up in the SH rankings – that made me overconfident enough to give my readers the option of voting for “Spoonman”. I knew once I put it down as a choice, it was only a matter of days before I’d have to put my money where my mouth was…and boy was I right!
