I Made This Half-Pony Half-Monkey Monster To Please You

August 31, 2009 at 3:24 am (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

Hmm, it looks like I’m having one of those days where it’s taking me longer to formulate the first sentence of my blog post than it did to FC the song I’m writing about. Oh goody! Honestly, a lot of the time there isn’t anything particularly compelling about the logic behind my daily song selection, but if I didn’t write an intro paragraph I’d barely have an article at all! Jonathan Coulton’s “Skullcrusher Mountain” got its shot at the spotlight because the lyrics make me smile. Pretty much the whole reason in a nutshell right there. Nerdy songs about mad scientists = awesome, there’s just no arguing with that!

I’ll Be A Rock N Roll B*tch For You

August 30, 2009 at 4:32 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

Wow, I really don’t have much of anything to say about today’s FC. To continue yesterday’s trend, I decided to do another song with the game’s vocal track turned way down. Thing is, I was just so tired when I got around to starting this run that I didn’t want to deal with learning a new song from scratch – which would really be the best test to see if eliminating the “real” vocals helps me or not. Oh well, plenty of time for that over the next few weeks! Instead of something totally unfamiliar, I picked “Moonage Daydream” by David Bowie because it’s mellow and trippy, plus I hardly ever get to sing it because not a lot of people have it. Then again, I could say that for most of the 400+ DLC tracks I have, argh! *shakes fist at random BQPers with no DLC*

Maybe, I Don’t Really Wanna Know…

August 29, 2009 at 6:59 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

Isn’t it funny how life gets in the way of your plans? I knew I was going to be out super late last night, so I made sure to get my FC (“Live Forever” by Oasis) out of the way early. I even got the video trimmed and uploaded to YouTube before heading out the door! All that was left to do was edit/upload the screenshot and write the article. Indulging in a beer & 2 vodka shots after Rocky (I was the “designated adult” while our cast leaders were out of town) made those tasks impossible when I got home, so I passed out instead. Then I spent the first 3+ hours after regaining consciousness providing long-distance tech support to my parents! Blaaaaargh! Once that was over with, food and a mental margarita were DEFINITELY in order. Somewhat refreshed, I was finally able to give my blogsponsibilities the attention they deserved. Hey, I like the sound of that! Blogsponsibilities FTW!

You Know I’m Such a Fool For Yooooou

August 28, 2009 at 3:41 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

Finally got around to seeing District 9 with some friends last night. Good stuff, though I’m not sure if I was prepared to see so many people get liquefied…icky! After the movie, my buddy GxSlim tagged along back to my place and we vox dueled on my stream for a couple of hours, closing out the night with a rousing meow-off (yes, I said meow-off!) of The Dead Kennedys’ “Holiday in Cambodia”. Hey, our scores mighta sucked, but it sure was fun for the audience! Once he headed home, it was time to get the day’s FC out of the way. I was feeling a bit girly and mellow, so The Cranberries’ “Linger” (an also-ran in some of my earlier polls) seemed like the perfect choice.

The Jig Is Up The News Is Out, They Finally Found Me

August 27, 2009 at 6:00 am (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

Ah Wednesday night, time to FC another track of my audience’s choosing! I figured that once a week is often enough to subject myself to my readers’ whim, wouldn’t you agree? Someone had written Styx’s “Renegade” in on my last poll, and it quickly proved popular when I put it up for voting. Call me crazy, but maybe the song’s Impossible rating on vocals had something to do with “Renegade” winning the public’s heart? If I didn’t know better, I’d say my readers wanted to throw me a challenge. What am I talking about? Of COURSE they were trying to give me something tough! More fun to read about/witness a whole lot of flailing than instant success, right?

Yeah I’m Runnin’ Down a Dream!

August 26, 2009 at 6:38 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

When they announced this week’s DLC offering, I pretty much exploded in a frenzy of, “Tom Petty’s in Rock Band! Tom Petty’s in Rock Band! SQUEEEEEEE!!!” Not very dignified, I know, but I was too excited to be ashamed! I was even happier to find that one of the tracks being released was “Runnin’ Down a Dream” one of my favorite songs to play whenever I drive. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sung along with Tom on this tune while speeding down the highway. I couldn’t wait to get this track into my game, and I decided way in advance to make it my FC pick for the day it released. Yay, Tom Petty!

I’m Fine, But I Hear Those Voices At Night…Sometimes

August 25, 2009 at 8:56 am (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

So I chose The Killers’ “Spaceman” for the night’s FC, drawn by its infectious bounciness and thinking my familiarity with the song would propel me to rapid success. Well, I was wrong about that. What a surprise! It turns out that “Spaceman” is littered with a bunch of junk that tends to trip me up on vocals. Oh, I’d picked a winner alright! Of course, I was up to the challenge, although it took me almost 50 minutes to get through a single 100% run on the song! While previewing the FC video before uploading to YouTube, I was a bit dismayed that it wasn’t my best-sounding attempt of the session, but then I saw that its roughness let me see where and how I’d made my vocal adjustments more clearly. Interesting…

Clock Is Ticking While I’m Killing Time

August 24, 2009 at 3:29 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

I’m gonna come right out and say it: I hate singing Lacuna Coil songs. No, I don’t think hate is a strong enough word. Loathe, that’s more like it! I LOATHE singing Lacuna Coil songs. I know, you’re all saying, “Blasphemy! How can a chick hate Lacuna Coil?” Well, I guess I’m just the exception that proves the rule, or some such nonsense. I have both of the band’s available DLC tracks – downloaded for free via the Pepsi promotion at my friends’ insistence (peer pressure FTL!) – but have barely played them. Not much of a shocker, considering “Our Truth” was one of the toughest on-disc tracks for me to even gold star, bleh! Thing is, when you’re looking to raise your ranking on ScoreHero, it’s all about the base game, and eventually you’ve gotta take on the songs you despise the most if you wanna stay in the game. I figured now was as good a time as any to show ol’ Lacuna Coil what I’m made of. After all, can’t be letting some Italian band get the best of me! No way no how!

Ridin’ The Storm Out, Waiting For The Thaw Out

August 23, 2009 at 7:14 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

Another late night, another day of recovery. Ah, the morning after, how blurry you often are! I confess that I started out the day’s Rock Band 2 session singing something a bit more ambitious, Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue”. Over the past couple of weeks my ScoreHero ranking dropped several places and I was hoping to regain a little ground by improving my score on a base game track. I looked at the 6 RB2 tracks I’d yet to FC & saw that I stood to gain over 59k if I could get better at TUIB! With that kind of margin, I knew I didn’t even need to score 100% on the song to improve my overall ranking. That took a little pressure off, since restoring my rank was the real goal here. Of course, if I could also FC the darn thing, all the better, but as long as I improved my score & ranking I’d be happy.

Gone Away – a Growly Song for a Post-Win Day

August 22, 2009 at 8:19 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

Oh I’m so freakin’ frackin’ TIRED! Supposed to go to a party tonight too. I know if I get there at all I’ll be late at best. Last night wasn’t actually so long as much as it was action packed. Right after I got yesterday’s video posted, my buddy and I headed out to a local tournament organized by CyberCircuit. I hadn’t even planned to attend (let alone compete!) until a couple of days earlier, when a band short on members put the call out for a vocalist. When the drummer/band leader suggested we do “Spiderwebs”, well, you KNOW I was all over it! Our last-minute ragtag bunch ended up winning the competition – and a bunch of snazzy prizes, including an Ion drum kit, which is sitting on my living room floor as I write this! Wooo, my first tournament win, and hopefully not the last!
