You Are The Juice I Need For Life

April 18, 2010 at 9:38 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

I’m not really feeling any better today than yesterday, so I was hoping when I fired up my laptop that I could find another pseudo-sub-standard FC in my library to post so I wouldn’t have to sing anything. I actually thought I found something suitable, but when I went to edit the video, I found that my dog started barking furiously at someone in the hallway during the outro, making the footage, for my purposes, completely useless. Determined not to fall any further behind on my blog entries, I had no choice but to fight the symptoms of my illness long enough to FC something after all. Crap. On a stick.

Promise You, Have Been True

April 17, 2010 at 8:26 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

I actually worked on “Polly” last night to fill some of my downtime before heading out to a special Rocky Horror performance on a fetish-themed party cruise. I was hoping to make it my 2nd FC for the day, catching up on more of my PAXEast backlog, but I wasn’t satisfied with my squeezing and decided to work on the song some more today instead. Unfortunately, the combination of getting caught in the rain while traveling to the pier and wearing a costume that is little more than underwear on an unheated boat brought on a recurrence of the ear infection I’d recently gotten over, in addition to a host of flu-like symptoms. Ughhh.

You’ll Never Shine If You Don’t Glow

April 15, 2010 at 10:07 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

It looks like there was a bit of an oversight when “All Star” was being playtested before being released as DLC earlier this week. See, if you happen to get the video shoot venue, as I did for my FC session, the game locks in on a single camera for the entire song, rather than cutting between all the available angles. It isn’t too terrible if you happen to lock into a wide shot that shows multiple band members (which is luckily what I ended up with on my highest-scoring run), the end result is boring, but serviceable. However, it’s another story entirely when all you’re seeing for the whole song is the drum heads (but not the drummer), or the bassist’s strumming hand (plus upward angle shot of bassist’s nostrils somewhere in the corner)! Mind you, this particular glitch doesn’t occur if you end up in a stage venue. Even so, someone at Harmonix is probably kicking themselves over this right now, don’tcha think?

Nothing Or No One Will Ever Make Me Let You Down

April 13, 2010 at 3:28 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

I’m gonna come right out and say it: I was pretty miffed when I finished my highest-scoring run of “Kiss Them For Me”. With the squeezes I managed to pull out of the 2nd & 3rd activations, I SHOULD have squeaked by Billtvshow’s 1st place entry on ScoreHero by 4 points. However, on my 3rd activation, I must have waited just a teeny-tiny bit too long to deploy, resulting in OD not registering for the very beginning of the phrase immediately following the window. This caused me to lose a tick or so under OD, resulting in a loss of 24 points for that phrase. I’d noticed this happening a few months back on a couple of tracks right after importing the LEGO: Rock Band songs, but hadn’t seen it occur for months until today’s session. What’s more, on an earlier attempt I earned the same 104 extra points on my 3rd activation without losing points on the preceding phrase. If only I’d managed to do that on my best overall run as well, grrr! Poop poop poop poopity poop, that’s what I say!

Said If You’re Gonna Play The Game Boy, You Gotta Learn To Play It Right

April 12, 2010 at 9:05 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

Wow, this was a tough FC for me! Seriously, I really think it’s mis-tiered on vox, because there’s no reason at all why a one-dot song should give me such trouble! Of course, the fact that it’s charted smack in the middle of the major break in my range might have something to do with it. I tried singing the whole thing low, I tried singing the whole thing high, I even tried octave switching on alternate phrases, but that proved messiest of all and was swiftly discarded as a plan of attack. Eventually I went the low route in the interest of comfort & consistency, but the entire time I felt like I was participating in some kind of vocal limbo competition, pushing to see how low I could go. If nothing else, this session served as a GREAT workout for the lower portion of my vocal range!

You’re Lucky Lucky You’re So Lucky

April 11, 2010 at 10:49 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

As is my habit, before starting tonight’s FC I checked the song’s top scores on ScoreHero. After seeing that there was a huge point gap between the 2nd & 3rd place scores, I figured I’d probably be spending a good deal of time trying to find a better path for “Do You Want To” than what was listed in the SH Wiki. I eventually stumbled upon a path that, while probably not optimal, certainly got me closer to the front-runners than internetguy87’s 3/BOD, 4/ submission, and after about an hour I was satisfied with my score and ready to pack it in. It was only then that I discovered a technical glitch that rendered all the video footage of my session completely unusable!

And I’m At A Loss So Please Explain

April 10, 2010 at 9:44 pm (Rock Band) (, , , , , , , , )

I don’t really have a good reason for picking “Database Corrupted” as tonight’s song. I find it pretty whiny and monotonous as far as melodies go to be honest. Then again, those kind of songs are generally pretty easy to sing, especially when I’m low on energy and looking to avoid anything screamy that will strain my voice. Now that I think about it, that’s probably EXACTLY why I picked this track, opting to put up with a little musical boredom in the interest of getting the job done. It’s just a pity that the uninterrupted droning makes the song seem waaaaaaaaay longer than it actually is! Then again, I did work on it for over an hour trying to get a run with decent squeezes, so that might be coloring my perception a tiny bit!
